I got to meet up with Renata outside the Alexander Wang show this past Sunday, September 9th, for Fashion Week. It was a fun NY minute. I don’t personally know Renata, but I briefly met her at a wedding we both attended a few months back. During the wedding, I waited for a good opening to introduce myself, as I am a big fan of her work on TikTok and respect her talent to capture our attention with a good lip sync video, a dance (sometimes with friends), or a story (truly a fan). Some of my favorite videos include her dad and her family—they are all super funny.
As she takes over TikTok and becomes a household name (potentially in Mexico and Latam), I was really happy when a friend told me he was going to work with her for the Alexander Wang show taking place during NYFW. I shot my chance and asked him to tell her if she’d be down for a hyper-quick shoot outside the show. I didn’t want to create a hassle with her timeline, and I knew I could capture her as she arrived. Shooting outside the show took me back to when I was shooting street style during my Fashion Week days. I do not miss it.
I love that she had her camcorder with her, but not gonna lie, everyone has a camcorder now. But it’s not the same—for me, Renata is my Emma Chamberlain, so she’s more than allowed to carry her camcorder (not like a lot of people I saw in NYC—everyone).
I’m not gonna lie, it felt different to have the talent get to the show and go directly to you for the photo. Of course, other photographers saw my photo spot and came to copy it right after (don’t miss street style during FW). We found a black back wall in front of the show, and I was waiting there as she arrived. I saw how a line was forming to take her photo after me. I was a little edgy knowing others would take my shot but quickly got over it. I told her, “Sorry I am creating a queue for you,” and she laughed.
It was a pleasure to get to work with Renata, and hopefully she’s back at the office soon with more time for a chat—and a TikTok (“cries in Spanish” Pol).
Thank you Renata.
